History

The Washington Art Association, a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers, was established in 1952 by a group of local artists seeking ways to better connect with fellow artists in the community. Their goals were to promote an understanding and appreciation of art and to encourage and facilitate the study and practice of the arts.

Today, the Washington Art Association, which over the years has earned a reputation as an important participant in the Litchfield County art scene, continues to hold those original goals as its standard.

The high caliber of exhibitions for which the Washington Art Association is known was established early on, with celebrated artists such as Alexander Calder, Andre Masson and Yves Tanguy participating in early shows.

Since then, more than 450 exhibitions have been on view showcasing the art of both aspiring and established artists from all over the country. The exhibits attract over 10,000 visitors a year.

In addition to its exhibitions, WAA offers studio classes, special events including the annual Holiday Gift Sale, and the Creative Space.

Membership to WAA is open to all.
